June 2, 2010
Hi folks!

The 2010 dive season is underway, with all of our local dive boats running full dive schedules. The Long Island Divers Association/ Eastern Dive Boat Association discount program is back, and ready to bring you another great dive season! New to the program this year is the dive boat Jaimaine, sailing out of Shinnecock, with a sponsored dive with Long Island Scuba on July 24th. Also joining us is the dive boat R/V Wreck Valley, sailing out of Jones inlet to the wreck of the Asphalto on June 26th, with co-sponsoring dive shop Swim and Scuba.

There is a new twist this year, with local dive shops getting in on the action. Local shops will be co-sponsoring dives and providing free air fills and/or equipment rentals for all participating divers. Get in touch with your favorite shop for more information.

Last weekend saw the first sponsored dives of the season with a Saturday trip aboard the Sea Turtle out of Montauk to the wrecks of the U-853 and the Lightburne. This trip was co-sponsored by Swim and Scuba Dive Center in Rockville Center. LIDA treasurer Russ Lusterman reports that participants enjoyed 2-3 foot seas and no current with 15 feet of visibility and 47 degree temperatures at the bottom. A beautiful 75 degree day helped everyone warm up during the surface interval. What a great way to kick off the season!

Sunday found us on the Karen II of Brooklyn, heading to the wreck of the Valerie with the folks from Kings County Divers. A beautiful day and calm seas made the ride out a pleasure. While visibility was well over 20 feet going down the line, recent swells and the resulting surge reduced the visibility at the bottom to under 10 feet. Fortunately, the Valerie is an intact wreck and very easy to navigate, so we had no problem finding our way around. During the surface interval Captain Bob unveiled his new secret weapon, the Grillmaster 5000! The Karen II can now lay claim to "King of the Grills" with a magnificent new BBQ that would be right at home in the swankiest Hamptons backyard. Churning out perfect burgers, dogs and sausage at a furious pace, we were well fed and ready for our second dive in no time!

This coming Sunday will find us on the Fish On sailing out of Moriches to the Moriches Artificial Reef System, with co-sponsoring dive shop Hampton Dive. The cost is $90 and includes food, beverages and a free t-shirt courtesy of LIDA, and free air fills courtesy of Hampton Dive. There are still a couple of spots left but they won't last long, contact Randy at Hampton Dive at 631 727 7578 to reserve your spot for the 8am departure.

The weekend of June 11-13 will find us joining the Northeast Diving Equipment Group for it's annual Vintage Dive Gear Rally at Brownstone Park Quarry. This is your chance to dive a wide variety of vintage military and commercial diving gear, including the legendary U.S. Navy MKV. Brownstone Park will be offering a weekend pass for $45, come on up and lend a hand, and dive some of the coolest equipment imaginable.

The 2010 dive season is in high gear, with the water getting warmer every weekend and an incredible array of diving opportunities ahead of us. See you out there!
